Preview: Irish Next on Devils' Target List

October 13, 2003

Lincoln County travels to Augusta this Friday night to take on the Aquinas Irish on their turf near Daniel Field. The Catholic private school won 3 straight games this season, but suffered losses to Johnson County, Twiggs County, and Harlem.

The Irish are now coached by former Evans High head coach Jim Connor, and may better their 2002 record of 4-6. Aquinas (Chronicle page) was picked by many to defeat Johnson County last week, but the Trojans pulled out their first win of 2003 with a 34-15 win.

The GHSF Magazine reports that "free safety Eric Stallings leads a veteran secondary that has to replace several experienced players in the front seven. .. Watch Stallings. The two-way starter is still only a junior and has the potential to be a top prospect."

In other Region 7-A action scheduled for Friday night, Johnson County hosts Warren County in a game many expect to decide the third and fourth seeds in the playoffs. Twiggs travels to Milledgeville in a game that probably will be very ugly for the GMC 'Dogs.

There'll be a big showdown way down in Colquitt when Miller County hosts Pacelli. Always strong Miller is surprisingly unranked after an 0-2 start, but Quizzy and the Pirates have gotten their ship sailing in the right direction the last 4 games. Pacelli's Vikings have been sailing strong all year, 6-0 and ranked in the Top 10. But, those Vikings haven't seen the likes of the Pirates' Skull & Crossbones so far this year. This "Thriller in Miller II", possibly the biggest game in Colquitt since the original TnM when our Devils "shocked the world" in 1997, will probably decide the Region 2-A championship.

In other Class A games of interest, Metter travels to Twin City to play ECI in 3-A, and Athens Academy visits Commerce to probably decide 8-A.
