Red Devils vs. Red Devils. Lincoln County vs. Bowdon

November 27, 2001

Both of those matchups have been rare.

The first because there are only six GHSA football teams known as Red Devils. The second because the two schools were on opposite sides of the brackets for many years, when Lincoln was in the south and the only possible meeting was in the finals, as happened in Lincolnton in 1989 when the homestanding Devils beat those other Devils 24-7 for the Class A title. Our Red Devils were led by All-American running back Garrison Hearst, who is still outrunning defenses.

The two schools will meet for the second time this Friday in Bowdon in the second round of the 2001 Class A playoffs. ** Bowdon is 7-4, including a 6-1 record against Class A teams. The one loss was a 40-0 whipping at the hands of Class A #1 Buford on September 28. Those Red Devils defeated Gordon Lee 28-16 in the first round in a game reported to have not been as the score indicates. Bowdon coach Dwight Hochstetler previously coached Greenville High to a 19-7 win over LCHS in the 1984 A title game.

Many are making Bowdon the favorite this week, due to their home field advantage, but the lads and fans from the east side of Georgia will have something to say about that.
