Devils new #1 in Class A

September 16, 2003

Thanks to Clinch County's last minute 16-13 loss to Charlton County last Friday, Lincoln County has now been selected as the #1 team in Class A by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and by The Associated Press pollsters.

In the AJC list, Clinch dropped to #2, followed by Hawkinsville, Commerce, Metter, and Twiggs County. The AP has Hawkinsville second followed by Clinch, Metter, Commerce, and Twiggs. Commerce visits Lincolnton next week.

In years past, Lincoln County was in Clinch County's shoes, when a loss to a larger, ranked school caused them to slip a notch or more in the polls. The Panthers were within five seconds of beating Charlton, and can certainly make a very good case they are still the best team in Class A.

Unfortunately, the AJC and the AP have not done the Red Devils any favors. Now Athens Academy this week and Commerce next week have even more incentive (if they needed any) when they visit Buddy Bufford Field.
