Campbell: "Twiggs does it all"

November 06, 2002

The Red Devils have to quickly try to recover from their turnover plague last Friday, as the powerful Twiggs County Cobras are headed to Lincolnton for their first appearance on Buddy Bufford Field.

Red Devil Head Coach Larry Campbell talked about Twiggs County in this week's The Lincoln Journal:

"This Friday night they will be the best football team on the field," Campbell said. "But the best football team, as we know, does not always win. We have a chance if we can get everybody healthy," he said.

"Twiggs does it all," he continued. "They play great defense and they play great offense by averaging about 40 points per game. They have tremendous depth and they have only two kids that play both ways. They have 18 seniors with plenty of leadership and they just moved down from Class AA so they have big numbers."

Still, Campbell sees beating Twiggs as a real possibility. "If our football team could jell and eliminate the turnovers, we would have a chance to win," he said. "We've got to try to pull an upset against a team that's better than we are. And we have to hope that GMC beats Johnson. That's the only way we can be number one and that's the way we'll approach it. That's our only salvation and that's the only way to look at it."

Twiggs County, sporting an 8-0 record, looks to be a lock for the Region 7-A title in 2002. A loss to Lincoln County will drain some of their steam, but will not itself knock them from the top perch. Twiggs will play Warren County next week while Lincoln County has an open date before starting the playoffs. As Coach Campbell noted in his comments above, the only way Lincoln can finish as #1 in 7-A will be to beat Twiggs and GMC defeats Johnson County. The Cobras have been stinging opponents on both offense and defense in 2002. The team, whose home games are played in The Pit in Jeffersonville (near Warner Robins), have outscored their rivals 295-16, or an average of 37-2! Their closest game was a 7-0 win over AA Wilkinson County. Twiggs was idle last week, after beating Johnson County 20-7 two weeks ago in a game that, according to Cobra fans, was their worst performance of the season.
