Lincoln County overcame six turnovers with a strong ground attack to run past Class AAAAA Evans 35-24 in the final scrimmage before the 2002 season starts next Friday against the very strong Washington-Wilkes Tigers.
The Devil turnovers setup short Knight scoring drives on several occasions. Evans went up 14-6 on two passes before Raquino Mickens scored on a 12-yard run with 1:14 left in the first half. Gavin Williams then went up-and-over into the endzone to tie the game 14-14 at the half.
With substitutes playing on both sides in the third quarter, Evans scored on a long pass and then a 41-yard field goal to take a 10-point lead. Taveras Stokes then caught a short pass and scampered 80 yards into the endzone, but a holding penalty nullified the TD. Freshman running back Shantavius Jennings, a small but speedy rusher, took a pitch and went untouched down the left side for the 90 yards and the TD. Emanuel Willis rushed around the left side for the PAT to pull the Devils within two points.
But the freshman sensation wasn't done yet, as Jennings danced along the right sideline for 20 yards to setup a 19 yard TD run up the middle by sophomore Belafonte Davis. In the fourth quarter Jennings had another 20-yard run to setup the final 10-yard TD run and the 35-24 Red Devil win.
