LJ: Four Red Devils attend Furman football camp

July 20, 2000

Four Red Devil football players attended Quarterback and Receiver Camp held on the Furman University campus in Greenville, South Carolina, June 18-22.  Over 300 young men attended the camp.

On Wednesday evening a competition and awards ceremony was held in Paladin Stadium.  Rick Stokes won the ten and twenty yard dash competitions; he was also voted by the Furman coaches as one of the three finalists in the wide receiver competition.  Casey Colvin was also recognized as one of the finalists in the tight end competition.  [Cedric Leverett and Andrew Smalley also attend the camp.]

Coach [Glen] Matthews commented that he was extremely pleased with all four participants' effort and progress throughout the camp and is looking forward to the upcoming football season.

(JAW's note: Lincolnton native and 1980 graduate Glen Matthews returns home as an assistant coach for the 2000 season.  After several years as a Devil assistant, Glen later became head coach at Louisville High and Jefferson High.  Welcome back, Glen!)
