Devils Stop Last-minute PAT to Preserve Win Over Social Circle

SOCIAL CIRCLE - Lincoln County held firm on a short two-point conversion run in the final minute to preserve a 28-27 region victory over Social Circle here last Friday night.

Tevin Gartrell rushed nine times for 91 yards before leaving the game with an ankle injury midway the fourth quarter. Josiah Claxton-Jones ran eleven times for 58 yards and one touchdown.

Trey Huff completed six of ten pass attempts for 118 yards and one touchdown, and rushed eleven times for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Franklin Brown caught five aerials for 75 yards. Semaji Jenkins caught a single pass but it was good for 43 yards and a touchdown.

The game started strangely with the Redskins backed up ten yards on two procedure penalties on kickoffs. Heath Creswell returned the third kickoff attempt about ten yards to midfield. The Devils marched down the gridiron on six runs. The last eleven by Jenkins earned the visitors a first down at the 7. Claxton-Jones rushed for three before QB Huff scored from four yards out. The touchdown came with 7:41 remaining in the first quarter. Cameron Miller booted the extra point for a 7-0 LC lead.

Social Circle broke loose on a 73-yard run for a touchdown on the Redskins' first offensive play, but a holding flag instead turned the play into a loss. The Reskins drove the field on 15 plays, including a 36-yard pass to the LC 34. Social Circle scored on a 1-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. The PAT tied the game at 7-all.

The two teams exchanged punts with the Devils taking over on their 39. A 10-yard rushing gain ended in a fumble recovered by the Redskins at the LC 48. A pass picked up a first down at the LC 37. A holding penalty negated an 8-yard pass, and a great play by C. J. Zellars resulted in a pass losing five yards. The Redskins punted to the LC 19 with five minutes left in the half.

Three rushing plays gained a first down at the LC 31. Huff passed six yards to Brown to the LC 37. Huff then rushed for five, with a personal foul penalty adding 15 to the SC 43. Huff then found Jenkins open behind the defense for a 43-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 remaining. The PAT kick failed, but the Devils led 13-7.

Social Circle quickly moved down the gridiron. A 26-yard pass setup a 3-yard touchdown run with 44 seconds left before halftime. The extra point kick gave the Redskins a 14-13 lead during their halftime Homecoming festivities.

The Redskins scored on a 72-yard pass a minute into the third quarter when their receiver got behind the Devil defenders. The PAT kick with 10:57 on the clock gave the home team a 21-13 advantage.

A 15-yard kickoff return started the Devils in good field position at their 44. An 8-yard run by Huff earned a first down at the SC 44. Huff rushed for four on 3rd-&-2 to reach the 32. Facing 4th-&-1 at the 23, Huff drove for two. After a loss, Gartrell was stopped at the line, but jumped left and scampered 23 yards to the 2. Claxton-Jones scored from there with 4:26 left in the third. Huff kept the ball and barely broke the goalline for two points to tie the contest at 21-all.

The Devil Defense stopped the Redskins without a first down on their next possession, forcing a punt to the LC 13. Huff ran for 10. Gartrell threaded his way through the middle and then burst for 47 yards to the SC 30. Zellars rushed for seven. Huff pulled the ball back from his running back then went through the middle of the line and untouched for 22 yards and the go-ahead score. Miller's PAT kick gave the Devils a 28-21 lead with 11:03 left in the region game.

The Redskins seemingly gained two on a 4th-&-1 at the LC 33 but a holding flag cost Social Circle 10. The Redskins then completed a hook and trailer play but the pass effort came up seven yards short of the needed line and the Devils took over at their 35 with 8:14 left.

Passes of 11, 19, and 27 yards from Huff to Brown gained a first down at the SC 15. A holding call nullified a 15-yard touchdown pass from Huff to Zellars. Three plays later Jenkins appeared to have caught another touchdown pass in the end zone, but the officials ruled the play incomplete. The Redskins took over on their 17 with 2:42 on the clock.

The Redskins converted on two fourth downs as they marched on nine plays to the LC 30. Facing 4th-&-7 at the 27, the Redskins scored on a pass into the end zone to close the gap to 28-27 with 49 seconds left. The Devils were called for roughing the passer. Social Circle accepted the penalty to be applied on the PAT. Social Circle called two time-outs and the Devils one. The Red Devil fans held their collective breath as the Redskins, from the 1 1/2, handed the pigskin to their best rusher. He met the Devil Defense on the right side of the line, and got stopped cold. The Devils still led 28-27.

The Devils recovered the expected onside kick. With one knee, the clock ran out to secure the Lincoln County victory. The Devils improved to 2-0 in the region and 5-2 overall.

Lincoln County, Commerce, and Washington-Wilkes remained atop the Region 8-A Public rankings with victories Friday night. W-W pounded Greene County 34-6 while Commerce defeated Towns County 28-20. The region takes this Friday off, with the only scheduled game Commerce against Franklin County.

The Devils' next game is against the very tough Washington-Wilkes Tigers in Washington October 22.
