GHSA has released the tentative region assignments for the 2020-2022 school years. Lincoln County will be in 8-A Public with Washington-Wilkes, Warren County, Greene County, Commerce, Social Circle, and Towns County.
Social Circle played in 8-AA this year. Commerce and Towns County were in 8-A this season. Commerce could visit the Devils next week, depending on their first round playoff game with Trion this Friday.
The decision to fully separate public and private regions in Class A will lead to longer road trips and schools in the same region for the first time.
Towns County High is in Hiawassee, located about two miles from the North Carolina line. For our Red Devils, a visit there will take three hours (non-stop) each way (through either Clayton or Helen). A football visit every two years night not be bad, but it will be very tough on other sports. Lincoln County and Towns County have never met on the gridiron.
Social Circle was in the same region as LCHS from 1996 to 2001. Commerce and LCHS have meet many times in both regular season and playoff matchups.
With seven teams in the region, we would expect to see the 2020 schedule include six region games and four non-region games. We will speculate that McCormick and Aquinas may be two of those games.
