GREENSBORO - Lincoln County whipped Greene County 49-13 here last Friday night to improve its record to 5-2. The Red Devils are 3-1 in division play.
Hancock Central upset Aquinas 22-14 to create a three-way tie atop the Region 7-A Division B standings with those two and our Devils each having a single division loss. The Devils will host Hancock Central next week for Senior Recognition Night.
Keenon Lampkin completed four of five pass attempts for 91 yards, and rushed eight times for 60 yards. Kolbi Ferguson rushed nine times for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Colton Willis scored two touchdowns while rushing six times for 42 yards.
The contest got off to a rocky start for the Devils as they fumbled the pigskin on the first play from scrimmage. The Devil Defense knocked the Tigers back four yards, leading to a short punt.
Ferguson dodged two tacklers along the left sideline for a 34-yard gain. Two plays later Willis scored on an 11-yard run. J. T. Bundrick the extra point with 8:23 left in the first. The Devils led 7-0.
A bad snap over the Tiger QB's head put the home team in a deep hole and led to another punt. Lampkin found Darrien "Tank" Elder open deep for 37 yards. Lampkin ran for five before Ferguson slanted left to paydirt. With the point-after kick, the Devils were up 14-0 with two minutes left in the opening period.
Greene County turned the ball over on downs at midfield as the second quarter began. Lampkin had runs of 12, seven, six, and four yards to setup a 12-yard touchdown run by Willis. The Devils led 21-0 after the PAT kick with 7:34 left in the quarter.
The Tigers scored on a 75-yard run to close the gap to 21-6 with 7:16 left. Their PAT attempt failed.
The Red Devils came right back. Ferguson returned the kickoff 18 yards. Lampkin and Tevin Gartrell each rushed for nine. Progress slowed, with the Devils facing 4th-&-4 at the GC 33. Ferguson went untouched down the right side for the touchdown. Bundrick's kick increased the Devils' lead to 28-6 with 4:16 left in the half.
The Devil Defense again did its job, with the Tigers punting to the LC 41. Lampkin passed 10 yards to Gartrell. Lampkin then threw deep to Brown, who made a great catch for 39 yards. One play later Ferguson scored from the six. With the kick, the Devils led 35-6 with 1:19 left.
Elder intercepted a Tiger pass on their next play, returning the pigskin ten yards to the GC 42. Lampkin passed five yards to Ferguson before he ran 22 yards to the 15. The Devils called a timeout with only eleven seconds left in the half. Lincoln County lined up for a 32-yard field goal attempt, but holder Elder took the snap and raced to the right and into the endzone. The PAT kick gave the Devils a commanding 42-6 halftime advantage.
Under GHSA's mercy rules, the clock ran in the second half. Gartrell scored on a 16-yard run with a great cut to get into the endzone. Darly Carruth booted the PAT with 2:24 left in the third.
Greene scored on a 5-yard run with 5:24 left in the game to provide the final 49-13 margin.
This Friday Lincoln County welcomes GMC for Homecoming. Kickoff is 7:30 with the Homecoming Queen being crowned at halftime. Fans are asked to wear black for the Red Devils' first "black-out" game. Go DEVILS!
