Missing their starting quarterback and two offensive linemen, the Lincoln County Red Devils were no match for Westside High last Friday in Augusta. Four turnovers led to a 40-7 loss in their first meeting ever with the Patriots.
Jake Hahn started at QB in place of injured senior LaKeith Lockhart. Offensive linemen Corey Davis and Jaquan Leverett missed the game due to injuries.
The Devils took the opening kickoff but moved backwards. A short punt gave the Patriots a great starting point at the LC 37. Westside drove 9 plays, scoring on a 4-yard run midway the first quarter.
On their second drive, the Devils were again stymied, with the Patriots taking over from the LC 46. A 23-yard run to the LC 7 setup a 1-yard scoring carry. Westside led 14-0 with 1:25 to go in the first period.
The Devils had a good kickoff return but fumbled at the LC 38. The Devil Defense prevented a first down, forcing a Patriot punt. The Devils fumbled again two plays later, with Westside taking control at the LC 18. Penalties helped setup a 4th-and-21 at the LC 29. The Patriots passed with a Devil defender tipping the ball at the goal line. Continuing the bad bounces for the Devils, the pigskin fell into the hands of the Patriot receiver for the touchdown. Westside led 21-0 with 10:51 left in the first half.
The Devil offense fumbled away the ball on the second play of its next possession. The Patriots picked up one first down before the Devil Defense stopped the home team on downs at the LC 21.
A Devil punt pushed the Patriots back to their side of the field before play was halted due to lightning in the area with 2:46 left in the first half.
After nearly an hour, play resumed. Starting from their 20 after a punt, the Devils offense showed new life and gained two first downs before the half ended.
Westside scored on a 71-yard run on the third play of the third quarter. The PAT put the Patriots up 28-0 with 10:13 remaining in the period.
Jamar Norman returned the succeeding kickoff 78 yards to the Westside 7. Three running plays moved to the 3 before a fourth-down pass attempt fell incomplete.
Westside marched 96 yards on nine plays to score from one yard out with two minutes left in the third. The big play was a 75-yard run to the LC 19. Westside led 34-0.
The Devils avoided the shutout with Jayden Robinson scoring on a 6-yard run with 8:23 left in the fourth quarter. Quay Hartfield was the leading groundgainer on the drive, carrying six times for 49 yards. Ryan O'Neill booted the PAT, cutting Westside's lead to 34-7.
In the waning minutes of the game, Westside recovered the fourth Devil fumble of the night and returned the ball 50 yards to make the final score 40-7.
This Friday the Devils travel to Jeffersonville to take on the Twiggs County Cobras. Dexter Copeland, the Cobras' coach during their best years a few seasons ago, has returned after four years at Baldwin High. Kickoff is at 7:30 in the game that matches teams from the two subregions of Region 7-A.
