Butch McGill, one of Lincolnton's finest football players from the first state championship team (1960), has passed away.
Johnny Spratlin provided the following:
"His sister Cherry Rowland told me a story that goes to the heart of what football means in Lincoln County.
"Butch's mother did not want him to play football because of his small size. His father would sneak him to football practice when he could, but if his father was not around or could not get away Butch found another way. He would either ride his bicycle the three miles to town or on some occasions he rode his horse."
Our condolences to the family and our thanks to Johnny for the story.
