Class AA Finals: W-W falls to Americus 14-0

December 16, 2000

Class AA Finals: Washington-Wilkes failed in its attempt to win its first state football title since 1967, as Americus shutout the Tigers 14-0 on a stormy night in southwest Georgia. Daccus Turman said new state records for total yards and total carries in a season. Both teams had first half TDs called back due to penalties, preserving a 0-0 halftime score. Americus scored on a TD pass with about 5 minutes left in the third quarter. Play was suspended for about 20 minutes early in the fourth due to lightning. W-W got to the Americus 10, but was intercepted at the 2. After a strange punt play, Americus took over at their 3, and hit 97-yard TD pass to take 14-0 lead. Americus set several offensive season records. Congratulations to the Tigers on a fine season!
