The Western Red Devils from Bowdon gave defending champ and #1 Wesleyan its toughest test so far in 2009, coming from 21 points down at the half to force overtime. The homestanding Wolves won 34-28, and will now host Wilcox County in the quarterfinals.
The Patriots from Rochelle went into Greenville and kicked the home team Patriots from the undefeated ranks with a surprising 39-19 win. Greenville, one of the last 3 remaining teams in Class A with a perfect record, had been ranked as high as #3.
Savannah Christian dispatched the Pirates of Miller County 28-13. Savannah Christian and Lincoln County will meet next Friday. Since both are #1 region seeds, the location is expected to be determined by a coin toss, although a neutral site may be considered.
Twiggs County walloped Chattahoochee County 47-18 to win its 11th straight game. Darlington defeated Commerce 28-14. The Cobras and the Tigers will meet in the third round at a site to be determined.
Clinch County and Holy Innocents will meet next Friday at a site to be named. Clinch County outscored ECI 39-28 to avenge last year's 33-21 win over the Panthers in the quarterfinals. Holy Innocents shutout Bremen 21-0 and is the last team to hand Wesleyan a loss: 7-6 in September 2008.
Interestingly, all four quarterfinals will have a private school facing a public school. Four of the eight quarterfinal teams also made the third round last year: Clinch County, Wesleyan, Wilcox County, and our Red Devils. This is the 8th consecutive year that Lincoln County has made the quarterfinals, the longest such streak in Class A. Our Devils barely missed the quarterfinals in 2001, losing one game short. Otherwise, the streak would be 13 years.
