Class A is setting up for the playoffs with few surprises expected this week.
Six teams have already locked up region championships: Twiggs in 2-A, Greenville in 4-A, Holy Innocents in 5-A, Darlington in 6-A, our Devils in 7-A, and Wesleyan in 8-A. The only two not decided are the two with subregions: 1-A and 3-A.
In 1-A, Clinch County and Miller County have a return bout from their September 25 game when Miller won 7-0. This time the winner gets the top seed and the loser second seed. Pelham and Seminole County meet Friday to decide the other two spots in 1-A.
Region 3-A puts the #1 seed from one subregion against the #4 seed from the other side, and the #2 plays the #3. Afterwards, somehow, the winners are ranked for the seedings.
Trion will finish the regular season with a tough game hosting region champ Darlington. A loss will give the Blue Devils a 5-5 record. Win or lose, they will make the long trek to Lincolnton on November 13 to kickoff the 2009 playoffs. Wilkinson County will host the loser of this week's Bremen-Bowdon clash. The Bremen/Bowdon winner hosts the Tigers of Washington-Wilkes, and Warren County will travel to Rome to take on the Darlington Tigers.
If we peek ahead just a bit and hope we get a win over Trion, the second round will be in Lincolnton with one of the following: Athens Academy, Social Circle, Eagles Landing Christian Academy, or Whitefield Academy. Athens Academy and Social Circle meet this week to decide the third and fourth seeds in 8-A; the winner goes in the Devils' bracket, as does the winner of the ELCA-Whitefield game.
The location for third round games are decided by seeding, or a coin toss of both teams have the same seeding. This sets up a potential long road trip for either our Devils (should they be so fortunate to reach the third round) or the Clinch County/Miller County winner during the Thanksgiving holiday. But there's a lot of football to play and games to win between now and then. Back to this week, and let's beat those Screaming Devils!
