With only two weeks left in the regular season, region races are shaping up around Class A.
Region 1 is split into subregions, and the last week of the season is used for a region playoff pitting the four best from each subregion against the other side, with the winners advancing to the state playoffs. Clinch County visits Pelham next Friday to determine the top seeds in the 1A subdivision, with a 3-way tie possible for the final 2 spots. In 1B, Miller County should be the top team after whipping Randolph-Clay 39-28. Seminole County and Randolph County meet this week to decide the 2nd and 3rd spots, with Terrell County probably finishing fourth.
In Region 2, Twiggs County will be the region champ. The Cobras demolished Telfair County 43-0 last Friday, and hosts Calhoun Falls Charter (yes, the Blue Flashes) this week. Wilcox County, Dooly County, Hawkinsville, Irwin County, and Turner County are still battling for the other 3 spots.
Region 3 is another split region with a playoff the final week of the regular season. In 3A, Savannah Christian will be the top seed with Claxton, Calvary Day, and Savannah Country Day fussing for the other 3. In 3B, ECI (45-13 winners over Metter) will be top Dogs. Johnson County bested Treutlen 28-22 last Friday to earn the 2nd spot. Treutlen should be 3rd with Jenkins County 4th.
In Region 4, Greenville remains undefeated, but faces a test with Marion County on November 6. Those 2 teams and Chattahoochee County and Brookstone should be the 4-A entrants into the Class A state tourney.
Region 5, the Atlanta private school region, has Holy Innocents taking a strong lead after a 42-7 whipping of Whitefield Academy. Eagles Landing Christian and Whitefield Academy will meet November 6, and Landmark Christian is still in the 5-A mix as well.
Region 6-A and Region 7-A will match-up in the first round of the state playoffs, with #1 seed playing #4 seed, and #3 seed meeting #2 seed. Higher seeds host. With 2 games left, Darlington is undefeated in region play with Bowdon, Bremen, and Trion having single losses. Darlington meets Trion and Bowdon plays Bremen in two weeks.
In our Region 7, things may be a bit simpler. It could come down to this week's game in Irwinton deciding the top 2 spots between our Devils and Wilkinson County, and this week's game in Warrenton deciding the 3rd/4th spots between the Screaming Devils and Washington-Wilkes. However, Warren County's visit to Lincolnton and the Tigers' visit to Augusta on November 6 could shake things up. Losses to Wilkinson and Warren would put our Devils on the road to west Georgia November 13 as 7-A's third seed. Losses to Warren and Aquinas would leave the Tigers sitting at home when the playoffs start. (Warren County defeated Aquinas 20-14 and Wilkinson beat W-W 19-7 last Friday.)
Defending state champion Wesleyan will win Region 8. The Wolves whipped Athens Academy 31-0 last week. Commerce and Social Circle are currently tied for 2nd in the region, and meet this Friday. Athens Academy will probably be the 4th 8-A team in the playoffs, and hosts Social Circle November 6.
