Devils Open 2008 with 14-0 Win over GC Tigers

August 31, 2008

LINCOLNTON's BBF: The Lincoln County Red Devils, as in many past seasons, used a hard-nosed defense and a good offense to shutout the Greene County Tigers 14-0 here last Friday in the season opener for both teams.

Bo Reed had an outstanding first half in his first quarterback start, completing his first 9 pass attempts for 150 yards. He finished the game with 12 completions on 17 attempts for 168 yards with no interceptions.

Jafabian Green led the ground attack with 95 yards and a TD on 13 carries. A. G. Middlebrooks carried 15 times for 54 yards and a score. Middlebrooks was Reed's leading receiver with 4 catches for 74 yards.

The visiting Tigers got off to a good start with a 53-yard kickoff return to the LC 44. They moved to inside the Devil 20 before the Devil Defense stopped the Tigers 7 yards short on 4th down. After swapping punts, Lincoln started from its 16 and drove to the Tiger 29 before the drive fizzled.

After another punt, LC started from its 43 but lost 5 yards on a fumble. Reed then found Middlebooks open for 36 yards to the Tiger 26. On the next play Stacy McClendon caught a Reed pass and was stopped just inches from the goalline. Middlebrooks scored from there with 9:31 left in the first half. Vance Tarver increased the lead to 7-0 with his PAT kick.

Greene County returned the succeeding kickoff 15 yards before funbling at their 18 with Guy Sample recovering for our Devils. Middlebrooks rushed for 4 before Green scored from the 14. Tarver's kick gave the Devils a 14-0 lead.

The Tigers threatened early in the fourth quarter after a 37-yard pass gave them a first down at the LC 12. Three plays gained 8 yards to the LC 4. The Devil Defense stopped the Tiger ballcarrier about a football short of the first down, preserving the shutout.
